UNT recruiting traffic to pick up in early 2011
North Texas football recruiting expects to fire up again after the start of the new year with more official visits the weekend of Jan. 7-9. Some new faces have appeared on the scene since the end of the season, while other familiar ones linger. Here are a few updates:
Andrew Power, TE, Arizona Western CC: Earlier this week, Power said he was within days of making a decision, but that the recruiting process had been one of the "weirdest thing I've ever been through." Power wouldn't talk about other schools left in the picture, but he has offers from UNT, Memphis, Nevada and Utah State. Whatever interest he had in Tennessee last summer after committing to the Vols - or the Vols' interest in him; who knows - faded quite some time ago. One teammate of Power's at AWCC said he's "real high" on UNT, and that he was trying to convince that player to go to Denton with him. "He said UNT is big on his list," the player said. "He thinks he's got an opportunity there."
Ronnell Wright, DT, Butte (Calif.) CC: Keeping tabs on this prospect has been tricky. He's turned a bit elusive in recent weeks after sounding like UNT might get his commitment. That apparently didn't happen, and Wright is shopping himself again to bigger programs. He said he expected to visit Kansas State in early January, but it's uncertain if that will happen either. He'll have to do another semester at Butte to sign with Ole Miss and said he didn't like that option. He also mentioned Oklahoma State as a potential visit destination, but nothing was set up at the time. Miami (Fla.) might have entered the picture recently. Wright still has offers from UNT, UTEP, UAB, Arkansas State, Washington State, Western Kentucky, Middle Tennessee (which he's visited) and Idaho. He said he'll make a decision
before the second term starts Jan. 24 at Butte.
Kevin Robertson, WR, Houston Northland Christian: Robertson is expected to visit Jan. 7-9 weekend and might nix a planned visit to Wyoming - his only other offer - afterwards if he's swayed enough by the UNT sales job and new stadium, which was just a shell the last time he was on campus in the summer.
Reggie Bullock, RB, Arizona Western CC: Bullock said before Christmas he was taking things slowly after rushing for 3,000 yards and 37 TDs in two JUCO seasons. He's holding offers from UNT, Hawaii, Memphis, Arkansas State and Utah State and could be headed to Denton soon for a visit. The Hawaii offer, though, seemed to intrigue him, as it would most of us mainlanders.
Kyle Stouffer, OL, Highland Park: This big tackle is taking his time but could be Ivy-League bound to Dartmouth or to Division III Washington University in St. Louis if he doesn't decide to stay close to home and attending UNT. He has a chance to make a huge impact playing for the latter, but when you speak to him, Stouffer sounds as if he's making a weighty life decision with his college choice. UNT really wants him, but he might have other ideas about his college football experience.
